HIV Prevention

The New Zealand AIDS Foundation’s (NZAF) HIV prevention initiatives are based on robust scientific evidence and epidemiological and behavioural surveillance
African communities are the second population group most at risk from HIV in New Zealand. The vast majority of HIV transmission for people living with HIV in these communities occurred overseas. While onwards transmission within New Zealand-based African communities remains very low, it is important to focus on these communities given the relatively high number of people living with HIV.
The NZAF has created Get it On!, a social marketing programme aimed at building a condom culture across New Zealand.
Love Cover Protect is part of the Get it On! programme. In our work with the African communities we seek to change the risk behaviours, raise awareness and provide our communities with information to support their health and wellbeing.
Our work in this area includes:
o Working alongside African community leaders to encourage condom use
o Youth workshops
o Community Educators Programme
o Sponsorship of key African events (Independence day celebrations, Sport events, Miss Africa NZ events and many more)
